Driving in Cyprus — rules, tips & road habits
2026-01-10 · Flipio
Cyprus drives on the **left**, like the UK. If you are used to right-hand traffic, take an extra moment at roundabouts and when pulling out of side streets.
Documents you need
A full driving licence from your home country is usually accepted for short tourist rentals. An International Driving Permit is recommended if your licence is not in English or Greek.
Speed limits
Urban areas are typically 50 km/h, rural roads 65–80 km/h, and motorways up to 100 km/h. Speed cameras are common around Limassol and Nicosia.
Cross-border travel
Crossing between south and north Cyprus is possible at designated checkpoints, but **not every rental allows it**. Check the listing before you book — Flipio hosts mark cross-border permission clearly.
Practical tips
- Fuel stations accept cards; some rural pumps prefer cash.
- Parking in resort towns (Ayia Napa, Protaras) gets tight in summer — arrive early.
- GPS works well; mobile data is widely available on both sides of the island.
